Annual Award Celebration:
Postponed

Dear CEJ Supporters,

Please be advised that the Coalition for Economic Justice’s 2022 Annual Award Celebration, originally scheduled for June 9th (over zoom), will be postponed in favor of an outdoor, in person event later this summer (details to be released soon). All purchased tickets and ads submitted may be refunded, if needed, or transferred to the later event.

Our decision to postpone was made in response to the 5/14/22 white supremacy attack at a Tops on Jefferson Ave. While we always encourage and deeply appreciate your support of CEJ and our work, our time right now would not be best spent in the planning, coordinating, and outreach efforts that would be needed to hold an award event in the manner we could be proud of. We instead are taking this time to support our staff, leadership, ally organizations, and communities impacted by the targeted attack in our city, as well as examining our current campaign work to ensure we are explicitly and intentionally focusing on the needs of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities and playing our part in eradicating white supremacy. We can not fully pursue true economic justice without explicitly incorporating anti-racism in our work and our framing, which would be true anywhere but carries specific weight in WNY as one of the most segregated (by race and income) regions in the country.

We look forward to honoring the workers of the ATU and Starbucks Workers United with you later this year. We believe in the work CEJ is a part of and will continue to ask for your support. We also invite you to stand with us in solidarity with the Black led organizations who are on the ground caring for their community while carrying their own pain from the tragic event and the longstanding impacts of systematic racism.

In solidarity,

Holly Nowak, LMSW
